The Taktshang Experience
Tiger's Nest is probably the place most visitors know before coming to Bhutan.
The monastery sits on a cliff above Paro and the only way to reach it is by walking.
Once you reach the monastery, your guide can explain the history of the site and its connection with Guru Rinpoche. It remains an active place of worship, not a viewpoint.
The trail goes through pine forest and climbs steadily. There are several places to stop along the way, including a viewpoint where you get one of the best views of the monastery.
The walking time depends on your pace and how often you stop. For some people it is an easy walk; for others it can be tiring, especially because of the uphill sections. Plan for most of a morning, including time at the monastery.
Comfortable walking shoes, water, a hat and a layer for the cooler upper sections. Take it slowly, particularly in the first days after arriving, while you adjust to the altitude.
Photography is not allowed inside the temples, so you will need to leave your camera and phone away for that part of the visit. Cover shoulders and knees and remove hats inside.
Early morning is usually cooler and quieter. The walk is possible for most of the year, though the trail can be slippery after rain or snow.
Horses are sometimes available for part of the ascent, and walking as far as the first viewpoint or the cafeteria is a good option in itself. If you are worried about the climb, let us know beforehand and we will plan the morning around your pace.
Good forFirst-time visitors, hikers, photographers and anyone interested in Bhutan's Buddhist history.
These are not fixed activities that have to be added to every trip.
Some travellers may be more interested in monasteries and history. Others may prefer food, villages, walking or meeting local people.
Tell us what interests you, how much time you have and what kind of pace you prefer. We can then work these experiences into your itinerary where they make sense.
Sometimes the best part of a day is something that wasn't planned.
